EDS 33000 - Introduction and Methods of Teaching Children with Disabilities in Cross-Categorical Settings

This course allows the student to examine the theories, classification system, characteristics, historical data, and related resources affecting diverse learners placed in cross-categorical settings. The student will examine the impact that disabilities have on the cognitive, physical, emotional, social, and communication development of an individual and examine how students differ in their approaches to learning. Methods and materials needed in adapting instruction and supporting special needs learners in general and special education programs are studied. Service delivery models including Response to Intervention (RtI), collaborative teaching, consultative services, itinerate teaching, and resource support services are emphasized in this course. Both commercial and teacher developed materials are examined. This course will meet the new Illinois certification requirement for veteran and new teachers as a special education course.
